Wroclaw Holi Colour Festival

September 3, 2017

If you’re a regular reader of my blog you’ll know by now that I LOVE Poland. After visiting Wroclaw for the first time this year, I have already been back once and have another trip booked for the Christmas Markets at the end of the year.

I feel like everyone has that one place they keep going back to, right? Well, Wroclaw is mine.

At the beginning of June I went spent a long-weekend there showing my boyfriend the reason I fell in love with the city the first time around. The weekend went far too quick and although I haven’t written a full blog post based on what we did yet, I thought I’d share with you one of my favourite parts of the trip.

Before I get started, I thought it would be good to point out that I am a BIG planner. I like to plan what we’re doing each day and try to stick to that as best as I can. I’m not as bad when I’m with friends as I know I can’t control what they want to do, but with my boyfriend who is happy to try anything it’s hard not to get too carried away planning.

By the time we were half way through the first day our plans had completely changed as we stumbled on a HUGE European festival in the main square. I decided to silence the planner in me and rolled with it and honestly, it’s one of my favourite days from so far this year.

After we had spent a few hours walking around looking for the famous dwarfs and getting a little merry off the £1 pints of beer, we decided to sit on the little make-shift urban beach. A couple more beers later we decided to take a break, go back to the apartment to charge our phones and get ready to head out for some food.

This quickly turned into buying more beers to drink at our AirBnB and a drunken trip to KFC.

When we came out of KFC we saw lots of people walking around covered in brightly coloured powder – like what you see at a colour run. Curious, we decided to follow a group of them to see where it had come from. We couldn’t see anything at the festival in Rynek, but we did managed to figure out where everyone was getting off the trams covered in powder.

Feeling like absolutely detectives (blame the beer), we got on the tram on the opposite side to where people were getting it off and stayed on there until we came to a massive field filled with very colourful people. Turns out, we’d visited Wroclaw at the same time as the Holi Colour Festival was being hosted.

We paid 15 zloty (around £3) for two bags of powder and followed everyone else to the main stage.

By the time we got to the festival there was only around an hour left so the majority of people had gone home, but it was still such an incredible atmosphere.

I got covered in pink, purple, orange, green and yellow powder, danced to music I’d never heard before, listened to a Polish DJ I couldn’t understand, received so many random free hugs and very nearly ruined my Michael Kors bag but OH MY GOD was it fun. 10/10 would do again.

I think it just goes to show that sometimes the things you don’t plan and that happen by complete chance can be the things that make a trip special. It’s definitely taught me to be less of a planner and to see where the day takes me, but only a little 😉

Have you ever been to a colour festival before?
