How To Stay Safe When Travelling By Car | The Winter Checklist | Travel

December 22, 2018

The 22nd December has passed which means – according to the astronomical calendar – winter is officially here.

The colder weather and dark nights are not going anywhere in a hurry, so it’s important to ensure that you’re being safe in all aspects of your life. Whether it’s looking after your health, ensuring your house is warm or keeping your car safe on the road – winter can be a difficult time for all.

The Winter Checklist For Your Car

When it comes to keeping your car safe during winter it can be hard to where to start. There are so many different things you need to bear in mind and when it comes to it, it can end up costing you a lot of money – especially if you live in a country that has bad weather during the colder months.

With that in mind, here are six things that should be on your winter checklist (all of which SHOULDN’T cost you too much):

Ensure Your MOT And Service Are Up To Date

One of the most important things you need to do in order to keep your car safe is ensuring it’s MOT and Service are all up to do. Failing to do so is not only a criminal offence, but it could result in a serious accident whilst on the road. If there are any major issues with your car you’ll be advised to fix them within a certain time frame, but if there are no problems then you’ll have peace of mind your car is safe and ready for winter. If your MOT is months and months before winter and you’re worried there may be something wrong with your car, you could always take it back to have a quick once over.

Keep An Emergency Kit In Your Boot At All Times

Having an emergency kit in your car at all times is essential in case you break down. During the winter the weather is much colder, meaning if you break down on the side of the road you’re going to need some essentials whilst you wait for assistance to arrive. Usually, people include warm clothes, water, non-perishable food and other emergency items.

Look After Your Tyres

The harsh weather can be really tough on your tyre’s so it’s important to check them each time you get in your car. You never know what can happen and if you notice an issue before it’s too late you could end up getting seriously hurt.

Make Sure You De-Ice And Scrape Your Car Every Morning

During winter it’s likely your car will ice overnight. Ensuring you use a scraper and de-icer to fix any obstructions to your vision whilst driving is so so important, not to mention a legal requirement whilst on the road.

Check Weather Conditions Before You Travel

If you want to ensure the roads are safe to travel it’s vital you check the weather conditions before you travel anywhere. Set up alerts for weather warnings on your phone, giving you plenty of time to plan alternative modes of transport in advance.

Be Proactive

The most important thing to remember when it comes to keeping your car safe in winter is to be proactive. If you see an issue, don’t hesitate to get it checked out and have it fixed. It could save your life.
