Staying Safe When Travelling To See Family This Christmas

December 4, 2020

Christmas 2020 is going to be unlike any other Christmas we have experienced before. The good news is, restrictions have been eased for a short period so we are able to see our families. However, that doesn’t mean that it is completely safe and if you are travelling to see family, it’s vital that you take steps to keep them safe, especially if you are visiting older family members. These are the best tips to stay safe when travelling over the Christmas period.

Follow The Guidelines

The most obvious thing you can do is follow the guidelines that are in place already. There is a fear that people will start relaxing their attitude over the Christmas period, but the restrictions are there for a reason. So, even though it may be tempting to push the boundaries and travel outside of the allowed window, you shouldn’t. Make sure that you continue following all of the guidelines about masks and social distancing as well.

If you are visiting relatives outside of the UK and you are taking a flight, there are different guidelines you need to follow. Most countries require you to take a covid test and get a pcr fit to fly certificate before you are allowed in, so make sure that you get this sorted. Check what the airline’s specific rules are in terms of wearing masks and checking in etc. If you stick to the guidelines, you can reduce the risk in a big way.

Avoid Public Transport If Possible

Some people have no other option but to use public transport. But if you are able to drive, you should take a road trip instead. The trains are likely to be very busy because everybody is travelling to see family in one small window. Although there will be measures in place, they are not foolproof, especially with so many people on public transport. Coming into contact with a lot of people immediately before seeing your family increases the chances of passing the virus on to them, so avoid it if possible. If you do need to get a train, make sure that you wash your hands and use sanitizer regularly, and get changed as soon as you arrive at your destination.

Consider Isolating Beforehand

The best way to make sure that you are completely safe is to isolate beforehand. If you are able to work from home and avoid going out to busy shops or restaurants for 2 weeks before you travel, you drastically reduce your risk of transmitting the virus. Although isolating is difficult and it can be incredibly lonely, it will put your mind at ease when you see family. However, if you are going to isolate, make sure that you take steps to look after your mental health during that period.

We all want to travel to see our families this Christmas but it’s important that we don’t get complacent. If you want to keep yourself and your family safe, follow these steps and be mindful about who you interact with and how you travel.

If you've ever found yourself scrolling through Instagram and all can you see is rows and rows of 'perfect' photos of people travelling well don't worry, because that's definitely not what you're going to find here.I'm a true believer that life is what you make it and although I don't always have the best luck while travelling, it's the thing that fills me with joy. With lots of mistakes, mishaps and chaotic stories behind me, I thought here was the perfect place to share my stories (along with everything I've picked up along the way)
