Barcelona is one of the most beautiful cities in the world with amazing architecture, lots of brilliant galleries and museums and plenty of buzzing nightlife. During the day, there are some wonderful beaches to relax on as well, which is why Barcelona is on most people’s bucket list. Unfortunately, it can be quite an expensive city so a lot of people avoid it. The good news is, it is possible to visit Barcelona without breaking the bank as long as you plan your trip in the right way. Here are some important tips to help you visit Barcelona on a budget.
Finding The Right Flights
Before you get to Barcelona, you need to think about finding the right flights. Barcelona airport is well connected and there is plenty of parking at Barcelona airport so it’s easy to get to and from your accommodation. However, you should also check other nearby airports, like Girona Airport, to see if there are better deals. Girona Airport is around an hour and twenty minutes from Barcelona by train, so make sure to factor in the cost of the train when making your calculations.
When booking flights, it’s important that you consider comfort as well. You want to be comfortable on your flight and some of the basic budget airlines don’t offer that comfort.
Free Attractions
There are so many amazing things to see in Barcelona that don’t cost a penny. The architecture in Barcelona is stunning so you can easily spend a day just wandering around to see what you can find. The city is filled with old Roman ruins to explore, like the Roman city wall or the aqueducts. If you want to learn more about these ruins, you can visit the City Museum for free on a Sunday. In fact, most of the museums are quite expensive but many of them offer the same free entry deals on the first Sunday of the month.
If you want a great view of the city, take a walk up to the Montjüic Castle, an iconic sight in Barcelona. There is a nice picturesque walk around the castle at the top of the hill, which has some amazing views.
There are a lot of walking tours around the city as well, which will give you more insight into the history of the incredible buildings that you see. While many of them are paid, there are some free ones if you do your research.
Watch Out For Pickpockets
Your trip gets a whole lot more expensive if you fall victim to a pickpocket and lose all of your money. Unfortunately, the large influx of tourists in Barcelona every year attracts a lot of criminals that are looking to rip them off, so you need to be careful. Many of the pickpockets you see are young teenagers because people are less suspicious of them, so always remain vigilant and assume that anybody could be a pickpocket, especially on the beaches and around the big tourist attractions. You can use a travel wallet underneath your clothes to keep your money safe as well.
Barcelona doesn’t have to be expensive if you don’t want it to be. As long as you avoid the pickpockets and take advantage of all of the free attractions, you can still have a great trip on a budget.
