A Modern List of Essential Travel Accessories

June 5, 2020

While most people haven’t done much travelling as of late, things seem to be slowly getting back to normal in the world. People are slowly starting to get out more and make future travel plans, but the way people travel will likely be very different moving toward. New safety measures and concerns will be taken into consideration when travelling, so here’s an updated list of essential travel accessories that you should be taking regardless of where you’re going.

Protecting against UV

For a safe vacation in the sun, it’s vital that you focus on protecting yourself against UV rays. Even if you don’t plan to go to the beach, any exposure to the sun for a long period of time warrants UV protection. So here’s what you can carry with you:

  • A bottle of sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30
  • Lipstick or lip balm that contains an SPF of at least 30
  • A large hat to shield you from the sun if you’ll be exposed to it for a long time
  • A pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes against UV rays and glare
  • For clothing, try to wear long-sleeve shirts and long pants to cover your skin

These are five essential items to carry with you if you want to protect against UV rays from the sun. We highly recommend that you invest in a good pair of round sunglasses because they’ll last long, they’ll guarantee to protect you from UV rays and they won’t break as easily. While a cheap disposable pair will do just fine, it’s always nice to have a pair that fits with your outfit and looks more fashionable while also providing UV protection.

Protecting against germs, bacteria and viruses

With the increased concern in the world regarding germs, bacteria and viruses, it’s easy to see why people are starting to think more about how they can protect themselves from catching anything. So here are some of the essential items you should be taking with you:

  • Hand sanitiser gel in pocket form (such as a squeeze bottle)
  • Hand sanitising wipes (alcohol wipes can work fine for this)
  • Small pack of disposable face masks
  • Small bottle of antibacterial handwash

These four items will do a lot to protect you from all kinds of germs, bacteria and viruses. Keep in mind that face masks are more for protecting others against your germs and bacteria. Their purpose isn’t so much to keep viruses and bacteria away but to contain them within your mask if you have a cough or cold.

Keeping your belongings safe

Keeping your belongings safe is incredibly important, especially if you’re travelling to areas that are known for having pickpockets.

  • Locks for your bags and suitcase with spare keys
  • A money belt instead of a wallet for daily trips out
  • Theft-proof backpack to use on a daily basis
  • Clutch bag or shoulder bag for daily use
  • Travel organizer to contain cards, money, passport and other essentials

The key here is to keep your belongings safe and organized so that you can find what you’re looking for without any stress or problems.

Gadgets, electronics and their accessories

These days, more and more of us are taking gadgets and electronics with us for the sake of safety and entertainment while travelling. For instance, people often take a small games console with them to make a plane or train journey more fun, and smartphones are incredibly useful for maps and communication.

  • Smartphone for regular use such as calling and maps
  • Battery bank to charge your devices when they’re out of juice
  • Travel plugs that fit the country you’re going to
  • Extra USB cables to charge your devices

It’s a good idea to travel as light as possible so you don’t end up bringing too many items. These are considered the essentials that we would recommend for every traveller, but here are a couple of optional gadgets and electronics that you might want to consider:

  • Secondary cheap smartphone that can use international SIM cards
  • Portable games console with included accessories such as a travel case
  • Small tablet or laptop computer for more convenient internet access
  • Good pair of headphones or earphones

We generally recommend taking as little as possible so you can focus on enjoying your holiday, but there are a couple of electronics and gadgets that everyone should carry with them to enhance their trip.

The right clothing and accessories for the weather

You should also consider bringing some essential clothing and accessories that suit the weather conditions that we’ll be exposed to. This section isn’t going to be a list of everything you should bring, but some essential items that you should consider depending on the type of weather that you’re going to experience.

  • Light and portable jacket for rainy and windy situations
  • Small portable umbrella for when it rains
  • Large raincoat with plenty of pockets for convenience
  • Extra pairs of socks and shoes for wet or sweaty conditions
  • Your swimwear

Again, this is going to be highly dependent on the type of weather conditions you’ll expect, but it’s also a good idea to dress and prepare for all kinds of weather.

Travel-related accessories to make the trip smoother

Lastly, there are a couple of travel-related accessories that can make your trip a lot smoother.

  • An eye mask to make it easier for you to sleep
  • Travel pillow to use on the plane, bus, train or anywhere that you could nap
  • Podcasts, audiobooks or a music playlist on your device of choice
  • Earplugs to block out loud sounds of planes, trains and cars
  • Flight socks that provide cushioning and help to reduce swelling
  • Comfortable pair of slippers

You won’t realize what you’re missing until you need it, so keeping this list handy is going to be a huge help whenever you plan your future travels. Make sure you don’t skip out any of these essentials and you’re guaranteed to have a safe and comfortable trip.
