Looking After Yourself Without Getting Caught Up In Diet Culture

Have you often wondered what you need to do to lead a healthy lifestyle? It’s not all strict diets and dodgy shakes, I promise. Below are just three suggestions of how to look after yourself without getting caught up in diet culture.

Stress

Are you constantly feeling stressed and overwhelmed? If so, then you need to make sure that you are taking more steps to relax and calm down. There are lots of ways that you can reduce stress in your life. For instance, you might want to think about exploring meditation. With meditation, you can guarantee that it’s easier to tackle some of the main problems that you could be facing in life. 

Another way to de-stress is to make sure that you are practising your breathing exercises. The right breathing exercises will mean that you’ll be able to think more clearly. You should practice breathing in common stressful situations such as when you are stuck in traffic. 

Workouts

You should be focusing some of your attention on your workout routine. Working out can provide tremendous benefits to your mental health. Find out a time that works for you and use that as your exercise slot. If you work long hours then you may find it more beneficial to work out in the morning before starting work. This can give you a huge boost of hormones and set you up for the day ahead. 

Find an exercise you actually enjoy doing so it seems less of a chore. You could go swimming, or go for a run around the park. If you are not confident with exercising in public you can of course work out in the comfort of your own home. You can either invest in some exercise equipment such as a treadmill or you can simply complete workout DVDs.

Sleep

Finally, sleep is vital for human beings. You should be aiming to get at least 8 hours of sleep each night. If you fail to get 8 hours each night then your body will feel physically and mentally tired and you can become irritable and grouchy. The amount of sleep is not the only important aspect, the quality is also important. If your sleep is disturbed then you could end up feeling more tired as you won’t be getting to the important sleep stages through the night. 

Continued disturbed sleep can lead to concentration problems, memory issues, and even the early onset of Alzheimer’s or dementia. Focus on why your sleep is disturbed, this could be a number of things. It could be due to anxieties you are feeling, meaning your brain isn’t turning off. It could also be due to an old lumpy mattress meaning you are tossing and turning constantly throughout the night. If your mattress is over 8 years old or you simply find it uncomfortable, think about investing in a new one.
