European Travel

For many people, getting the opportunity to travel through Europe is a chance of a lifetime. Between the many old-world attractions, museums, ancient architecture, culture and people there is simply no end to the amount of fun you can have.  There are dozens of dining experiences, art exhibits and historical places you can plan your days around. The Tour Guy can help you discover many places to visit and interesting things to do on your vacation.

Don’t Forget to Consider a Train Ride

One of the best things about travelling in Europe is the extensive amount of train tracks, allowing you to see some of the most beautiful countrysides in the world. Not only do you have a chance to get closer to some awe-inspiring scenery, but you can also do it on a leisurely train ride. In some cases, the tickets will even cost less than for you to take a plane. Don’t forget to get your ticket validated before boarding to ensure a smooth trip.

Make Reservations Early

The best way to ensure you get to enjoy the many unique restaurants is to make sure you have reservations well in advance. This is also a good idea when you are booking tours, train tickets, hotels, and airfare. Booking well in advance helps to make sure you get in the events. It also helps you get the best possible price, helping you save money and see more of Europe while there. In some instances, your early reservations can save you money while at the same time securing you a part of the trip you might not get to otherwise enjoy.

Pack as Light as You Can

When in Europe you’ll be navigating cobblestone streets, train stations and lots of sets of stairs because a lot of hotels in Europe don’t have elevators. This means you will want to make sure you have luggage that is light and easy to lug around. It’s also a good idea to have your luggage on wheels, making it easy for you to carry it to your room and further. Another benefit of packing lightly is that you won’t get charged for extra baggage.  There are so many attractions to visit and you will want to continue travelling around when you only have a light bag or two with you.

Remember Credit Cards Aren’t Accepted Everywhere

It is a common assumption that you can use your card anywhere in our technology-driven age, but there are many places in Europe that still only accept cash. Making sure you have some so you can cover taxi rides, tips, street market purchases. This will help your transactions run smoother and you will save on transaction fees. You can get the currency from an ATM, bank or even the airport when you land. Additionally, it’s not a bad idea to place a call with your credit card company letting them know you’re travelling so your account isn’t frozen.

Check Requirements for Your Visa Early

You don’t want to ruin your trip by finding out your tourist visa hasn’t gone through. There are many European countries that don’t need a visa, but you will want to know which ones do so you can plan accordingly. You can find all you need to know with a quick online search. Leave yourself enough time to start a new application if you must. If there is going to be red tape, it will be with the paperwork to get it started early.

Be Prepared to Walk

There are plenty of opportunities for you to walk, from exploring the city from covering one of the many large historical attractions. One of your most important things to pack is a comfortable pair of walking shoes. You will have that much more fun when your feet don’t hurt while you’re exploring.

Travel During the Off Season

One of the best ways to get more out of your European travel experience is to go during the off-season. This will save you money from your flight to your hotel package. You will also be able to get into many attractions without the long lines of popular travel times. Take a little extra time planning and look when the slower seasons are and book your reservations then. You will be thankful you did when you are able to see all the attractions you wanted to without a wait.

Linger in a Spot

It may sound strange but lingering in one location longer can allow you to get a different experience of the area. You will find local restaurants, venture off the path and generally make friends with the locals! This type of travelling can give you unique stories and experiences. Consider booking a small cottage and staying in a village for a month or even summer if possible. You’ll have an entirely new set of experiences under your belt.

Don’t Forget These Essentials

Regardless of what your plans are, or where you’re travelling to in Europe, there are some essentials you want to make sure to pack. Get an umbrella in your suitcase and you’ll be glad you did. There are several different kinds of travel umbrellas which take up less space but still offer protection. Earplugs are also good to travel with. They help plane and train rides go a little smoother. Depending on where you are staying, they could be needed for a good night’s sleep.

You need to pack your phone charger and other personable such as laptops and cords, as well as a camera if you use one in addition to your phone. Face moisturizer with SPF and a water bottle are also good things to pack for your trip. It’s never bad to protect yourself from the sun and carrying your own water bottle will help you save money and hydrate. Finally, make sure to get any prescriptions filled ahead of time so that you can pack those and avoid running out while in Europe.
