How To Make Your Rented House Feel Like A Home

October 31, 2019

I have been renting for almost 7 years now and each and every time I move I find myself struggling to make my house feel like a proper home. With limited control when it comes to renovations and decoration, it can be hard to get things looking exactly as you would like them to be. From not being allowed to decorate the walls to not being able to hang a picture from the wall, you will find some landlords have different rules from one another.

Whilst there are CERTAIN things you can’t do, there are a number of tips I’ve picked up over the last few years when it comes to making a place feel more comfortable.

So, how do you make a rented property feel like home?

Ask What You Can And Cannot Change When You Start Your Tenancy

One thing I always make sure I do when I start my new tenancy is to get in contact with my landlord to find out what we can and cannot change during our rental. Although it may not be a lot, knowing this in advance definitely helps when it comes to planning any renovations you want to carry out. In most cases, I have found that redecorating walls is usually okay as long as you revert it back to the colour it was before you leave.

Search Pinterest And Instagram For Lots Of Ideas

Once you know what you’re allowed to change within your house, it’s time to start searching Pinterest and Instagram for lots of amazing ideas and inspiration.

Although you may find that a lot of the ideas you come across are not suitable as they require heavy DIY and potential renovations, you will definitely be able to spot things that might be possible in a rented home. The best thing to do is always be on the lookout for inspiration as you never know what might spark a clever idea.

Get Creative When It Comes To Accessories

One of my favourite things to do in my new rental property is to get creative when it comes to accessories. From decorating my home with incredible prints to adding a cosy rug to my living room, the more accessories I have the better. I’m forever buying things when I’m out and about because it helps make me feel as though I’M making significant changes to my house. Although they’re only small, it makes all the difference. If you’re looking to buy a rug for your rental home, you can visit Cox & Cox here.

Another important thing to consider is that you have complete control over your furniture. Whilst it may not feel like it, the furniture in a room can make a HUGE difference.

Make Use Of Command Strips (My Absolute Favourite Things)

Finally, my favourite thing I have discovered since renting is COMMAND STRIPS.

These handy little tools are essentially like double-sided tape that you stick to both a photo frame and your wall. They have an INCREDIBLE grip and when you remove them, they leave absolutely no marks at all. I have hung HUGE frames up with just a couple of command strips and it’s been months without any casualties – they’re seriously amazing.

Because they leave absolutely no marks when you remove them, you can get a little creative when it comes to the things you’re hanging up. For example, I have a full gallery wall in my living room and prints above my bed in the master bedroom.

When it comes to owning your own home, you need to ensure you’re keeping it as clean as you can if you want to receive your full deposit at the end of your tenancy. A great way to do that is by hiring a maid. If you’re looking for a NYC maid service for your home, you can visit this site here.

Do you live in a rented property? How do you make sure it feels like home? I’d love some extra tips!
