When booking our trip to Amsterdam one of the most difficult things we had to do was book a hotel we all agreed on.
As a group of four with very different priorities, it was always going to be hard and after weeks of sending each other links we finally found one we all liked the look of. For me, the biggest factor was always going to be cost and for just two nights in the city it was looking a little pricey.
This meant I didn’t mind staying a little further out of the centre if it meant I could save around £50-£100.
We ended up compromising on distance and staying in Sloterdijk, which was an 8-minute train ride away from Amsterdam Central Station, making it was a little cheaper than those in the city centre.
We wanted to stay together as a group too, and finding a hotel with a four person room was MUCH harder than I originally thought it would be. We ended up booking a family room at the Amsterdam Teleport Hotel and after just two nights there I think we may have stumbled on a little hotel gem.
I think we paid just over £110 each for two nights, including breakfast on booking.com.
The place had so much character and was honestly an Instagram dream waiting to happen.
I think, based on the décor, the hotel is aimed at travellers as the vibe it gave off was a little like a hostel, only with proper hotel rooms rather than shared dorms. There were common areas on the bottom floors of each building and heaps of games consoles and old school gaming machines (like Space Invaders) in the reception area.
The corridors and walls where the doors to the rooms were located were covered in graffiti, which just added to the whole hostel-esque feel of the Teleport Hotel.
We arrived a little earlier than check-in so we were able to leave our bags in the store cupboard and head out exploring for the day. On the way round to the bathrooms (we were all so desperate after our flights) we also discovered a little gym area – not that we were planning on using it.
When we finally got back on the first evening of our stay we were VERY excited to get to our room and see what it was like. As it was a four person room I was expecting it to be quite cramped but I was so wrong. It was absolutely massive!
We had a huge (incredibly comfortable) double bed, a pull out double sofa bed, a small living room area, a spacey wardrobe, a TV and a decent-sized kitchen. There was so much space for us to leave our bags and spread out, nothing at all like I was expecting.
Our bathroom was located across the hall, which is probably the only bad thing I have to say about the hotel as going to the loo in the middle of the night was not easy in the dark.
The décor in the rooms was a little more ‘classic hotel’ than the corridors and common areas, but it still had a little touch of Amsterdam with the artwork on the walls.
When booking another thing that was important to me was breakfast. I think in the long run you end up saving money as you fill up as much as you can in the morning, and who doesn’t love a good continental? 😉
Breakfast was in the second building, so we made our downstairs and got a table straight away both days. There was a selection of breads, pastries, cakes, fruits, cereals and meats as well a hot food station where you could get pancakes and omelettes. I tried one of their pancakes on the first day but it was way too small for my liking, it was delicious with some pancake syrup though.
Both days I filled up on ham and cheese croissants which were incredible, along with the nicest apple juice I’ve ever tasted. They had a huge selection of drinks, but I ended up sticking with my favourite anyway… oops.
Overall I am so impressed with our Teleport Hotel experience. It was super close to the train station, easy to get into central, had such an awesome vive and was one of the comfiest night’s sleep I’ve ever had in a hotel. Throw in good company and it was the perfect place for a weekend in Amsterdam.
We’re already looking to go back for our next visit, maybe we’ll do the free bike tour next time too? 😉
