6 Top Tips To Help You Build The Confidence To Post Your First Videos On TikTok
Tiktok is an incredibly scary place and if you’re anything like me, you’ll spend 6 months scrolling before you finally take the leap and post your first ever video.
For a long time, my main worry was that I didn’t know how I was going to create content that was specific to my niche, plus size travel. I spent a lot of time telling myself that there wasn’t a place for my niche but my head started filling with lots of different ideas for videos, I started thinking that maybe it was about time I joined the viral app. My biggest obstacle now, however, was the fear that nobody would actually care what I had to say or they would care, but they wouldn’t agree.
Having heard lots of negative stories about brutal commenters and disagreements, my low-confidence and fear of confrontation had me putting off something I should have started a long time ago as now I’m posting every day, I’m starting to see the wonderful community that is out there.
My biggest push for finally joining TikTok was my recent trip to LA, where a friend (very lovingly) told me that I needed to loosen up a little bit more in front of the camera. With videos and photos being such a huge part of my career, I thought that joining TikTok where I HAVE to post videos was the online version of jumping in at the deep end.
And oh boy, was I right.
Although it’s only been 4 months since I posted my first video, I feel like my confidence has already improved a great deal. I mean, if you had told me at the start of the year that I’d be posting videos of myself on the internet I probably would have laughed until I had tears running down my face. I am ABSOLUTELY not a dancer and yet here I am, dancing every time I hit 1,000 new followers (if you want to follow me btw, you can find me here).
So, how did I find the confidence to publish my first ever post? I thought I’d share some tips and tricks I have picked up along the way.
Follow People That Look Like You
Seeing relatable body types in your social media feed is incredibly reassuring and comforting, especially if you struggle with your body image. It’s great for both your confidence and your mind.
Post Your Videos Privately At First
The more you start posting videos, the more you will get used to it. After a while, you will gain the confidence to go public.
Block Certain Words From Your Comments Section
I’d like to say that everyone on TikTok is lovely but unfortunately, that just isn’t the case. If you’re worried, blocking trigger words definitely helps.
Get Used To Being In Front Of The Camera On Your Own Terms
Take selfies and film video. The more you’re used to seeing yourself on camera, the easier it will get.
Wear What Makes You Feel Comfortable
If you’re wearing an outfit that makes you comfortable, your confidence will shine through.
Similarly, you should film in a place that makes you feel comfortable.
Be You (And Only You)
If you’re trying to be someone you’re not, you’re going to find it much harder.
Posting your video is the hardest part but with a little bit of practice and a lot of fun, TikTok can be an incredible platform. I’m so so so glad I joined!
