Lifestyle: Pizza Express Telford Review

On Saturday I was invited to Pizza Express in Southwater, Telford, for my first ever restaurant review. They've recently launched their new seasonal specials menu, so it was the perfect opportunity for me to go along and have a taste of the new dishes!

We arrived around 10 minutes late (stupid taxi company) and there was no fuss at all while we were seated at one their window tables - the best place to sit in a restaurant if you ask me! As it was 7.00pm on a Saturday night it was very busy, but it was nice to see that the staff were handling everything so well, with no one looking rushed off their feet.

Our waiter, Connor, was absolutely lovely too. I don't like it when a waiter or waitress comes up to you too many times (especially if you have a mouth full of pizza) but the service from Connor and the rest of the Pizza Express team was absolutely amazing.

We ordered our drinks and starters pretty much straight away as we knew what we were having - a prosecco and Pennette Formaggi for me, and a cider and Mozzarella Garlic bread for my boyfriend. The starters came within 10-15 minutes, which in my opinion is quite good in comparison to other restaurants on a busy Saturday night.

The Pennette Formaggi was absolutely amazing. It's basically the Pizza Express take on mac n cheese, with pennette pasta baked in Gruyere cheese, mozzarella, Gran Milano, garlic oil and black pepper. It was topped with more Gran Milano cheese and a little sprig of fresh basil. It was so gooey and cheesey, I loved it! It's a decent sized portion for a starter (think around the size of a child's pasta portion) and I think the extra Gran Milano topping really helped, and it was probably my favourite thing about the dish. I kind of wish this wasn't seasonal, as I could literally eat it all day every day.

For my main I ordered the Calzone Diavolo and my boyfriend the Sloppy Giuseppe pizza. We didn't have to wait too long, which again was amazing as we were pretty hungry. I have worked in an Italian restaurant before and forgot how big Calzones actually are as it is effectively a folded and stuffed pizza base.

The Pizza Express Calzone Diavolo had hot spiced beef, green peppers, red onions, pepperoni, mozzarella, spinach, tomato and Tabasco. I opted out of having the roquito or jalapeno peppers as they're a little too hot for me, but normally the Calzone Diavolo does have that extra bit of a kick to it! The whole thing is baked with pancetta and even more Gran Milano on top. As it was such a large portion I only managed to each two thirds of it, but it was really delicious. It was the right amount of spice for me and the mini pieces of pepperoni and spicy beef were gorgeous, especially when mixed with loads of mozzarella.

Finally, it was time to order desert, which I was really excited about. I had the Treacle Tart Cheesecake from the seasonal specials menu, while my boyfriend ordered the Leggera Tartufo Limoncello (which looked and tasted amazing by the way). The Treacle Cheese cake was a thick layer of sticky treacle on a biscuit base, topped with clotted cream cheesecake and which I had with a side of mascarpone.

The cheesecake was delicious, and although I was full I managed to finish every last bite. I'd never had a clotted cream cheesecake before, but it was much richer than your standard cheesecake and with the added sweetness of the treacle it tasted amazing.

The whole meal for two came to around £60, which included two alcoholic drinks and a starter, main and dessert each. Not bad for a high quality meal out!

Overall the whole experience was brilliant, I'd never actually been to a Pizza Express before and after this visit I would definitely go again - especially to the Telford one. We had a lovely chat with the acting manager, Asha, before we left and it really added to the whole experience. I'd definitely recommend paying a visit if you live in Telford or if you're visiting, and I'd reccomend everything off the seasonal menu too!

Have you tried the new dishes from the Pizza Express seasonal specials yet? I'd love to know what you thought, or what you would recommend I try next!

Lots of love,

*I was invited to Pizza Express to review the new seasonal specials menu, however all thoughts are my own honest opinion.
